2.福岡県の首都は福岡市です。

capital は首都の意味です。また、prefectureは県という意味です。
3. 福岡市には約150万人の人が住んでいます。
There are more than 1.5 million people in Fukuoka prefecture.
Fukuoka prefecture has about 1.5million people. でも同じ意味となります。
4. 北九州市は福岡県で2番目に大きい都市で、日本に20ある政令指定都市の一つです。

【宣伝】「Englishコーチン名古屋で英会話」について

再度当サークルの紹介とさせてください。
「Englishコーチン名古屋で英会話」は名古屋で15年以上活動を続けている英会話サークルです。
当サークルの特徴ですが、主に2つございます。
- 海外の出身の方も来られる
- 英語の記事を使ってディスカッションをする
1. 海外出身の方も来られる
名古屋は国際都市ですので海外の方が良く来られます。
アメリカ、イギリス、ニュージーランドと言った英語圏だけでなく、東南アジア、アフリカご出身の方も来られます。
2019年のラクビーワールドカップの頃は1/3以上が海外出身の方でした。
それぞれの国の言語の訛りはありますが、皆様非常に英語が上手いです。とんでもない意見が出たりして時にカオスの状態になりますが、非常にいいトレーニングになります。
2. 英語の記事を使ってディスカッションをする
当サークルでは3番に記載の通り、Japan Times, NYT, Washington Postなどの記事を読んでディスカッションを行います。
参加いただくだけで、読解力やスピーキング力の強化になるかと思います。

2019年の11月に実施した内容です。
オリンピックのボランティアに対して、全く異なる意見の記事を比較しながらディスカッションしました。
1枚目は東京オリンピックのボランティアについて批判的な記事。
2枚目は、ロンドンオリンピックのボランティアについての記事で、海外の方がボランティアについて大絶賛している記事です。
ボランティアについて賛成か反対か？
東京とロンドンオリンピックボランティアの意見の違いは何なのか？
以下の質問と資料を使って議論しました。

卍(スワスティカ)を地図に載せることを禁止に賛成？反対？
ディスカッション用記事
こちらも2019年に実施した内容。
国土地理院が外国人向けの地図の寺の記号を従来の卍から新しい記号(パゴダ)に変更しようとしたという話です。
卍はハーケンクロイツに似ているため、欧米人が懸念を示すためにとのことでした。
当時はオリンピック前のインバウンドが最盛期になっており、国際的に開かれた日本のために必要だと判断したようです。
記事はイギリスのガーディアン紙です。
単語は難しいですが、非常に分かりやすく日本の国内の事情(賛否両論)について細かく書いてあります。
国土地理院の判断について、賛成か反対か？以下の質問を使用してディスカッションしました。
ディスカッション用質問
- Have you ever seen “manji” symbol in Japan? Where have you seen it?
- Have you ever experienced confusing symbols in other countries? What kinds of symbols have you experienced?
- Table1 represents symbols for Japanese and renewed symbols for foreign tourists. Which is easy to understand for you?

テーマ⑤ 高校野球は虐待？投球制限は必要 or 不必要？

日本のアマチュアスポーツで最も人気があるのが高校野球。
この高校野球について、選手の扱いが対照的だった二つの記事を使って議論しました。
1枚目の記事はワシントンポスト紙の記事。
夏の甲子園で金足農業のエース吉田投手(現日ハム)が881球投げた話。
これは虐待ではないか？というタイトルがついてます。
2枚目の記事はその翌年に大船渡高校の佐々木投手(現ロッテ)が地方大会決勝の登板を回避した話。
この2人のピッチャーについての記事から、自分が監督だったらどうするのか？甲子園に投球制限を入れるべきか？など議論しました。

魅力が無い大都市 名古屋はどうしたら魅力的になるか？
社会ネタが多いですが、たまにローカルネタが入るときがあります。
名古屋は魅力的では無い大都市ってよく言われます。
東京と大阪・京都に挟まれているのであまり目立たないってのもありますね。
そんな名古屋が不人気な理由について新たな珍説が記事になったので、それを使って議論しました。
